Big Springs must follow state drought rules, judge orders

Farmers and ranchers in a Siskiyou County community may not continue pumping ground water for irrigation, following the latest court ruling. The Siskiyou County Superior Court issued an order denying the Big Springs Irrigation District relief from water curtailment regulations set by the California Water Resources Board.

A hearing was held May 5 in the Siskiyou County Superior Court regarding a case brought by Big Springs Irrigation District against the State Water Resources Control Board. Back on March 15, the SWRCB issued a Curtailment Order demanding Big Springs ID not turn on their wells this irrigation season. The farmers need this water for their thirsty fields, so the district board voted to seek a Temporary Restraining Order (injunction) against SWRCB.

Irrigators in Siskiyou County have won a court ruling to temporarily block a state water curtailment order that would have prevented area farmers and ranchers from tapping into percolating groundwater supplies they have relied on for decades. Superior Court Judge John Lawrence granted their request last week for injunctive relief to stop the state action.
